BMI Monitoring Training (CLASSROOM)

  • Wellness & Activity Center 1195 Hisey Avenue Woodstock, Virginia, 22664 United States (map)

Help monitor the health of local streams by becoming a certified Save Our Streams Benthic Macroinvertebrate (BMI) Monitor.

This classroom session introduces the methods used to evaluate stream health by studying aquatic insects. You'll complete the required training videos, review monitoring protocols, learn basic aquatic insect identification, and complete the certification test.

This session is followed by a required hands on field training on Saturday, July 18, where you'll practice sampling techniques and apply what you learned in the classroom.

Already completed the online certification? Great! You are still welcome to join our local field training to gain hands on experience and connect with the Friends of the North Fork monitoring program.

The official Save Our Streams online certification course is available through the Izaak Walton League for those who prefer to complete the classroom portion at home:

No science background is required. This training is open to anyone with an interest in protecting local streams and collecting meaningful water quality data.
