Paddle Smart

River Safety on the North Fork

A safe river day starts before you launch. Check conditions, know your route, and respect the river, the landowners, and everyone else trying to enjoy the water.

⚠️

Check River Conditions First

River levels, weather, and water quality can change fast, especially after rain. Look at current river conditions before you leave home.

  • Check river level and flow.
  • Look at the weather forecast.
  • Avoid paddling during storms or rising water.
  • Use extra caution after heavy rain.
📍

Know Your Route Before You Go

The North Fork bends, twists, and takes its time. A short trip on a map may feel much longer on the water.

  • Know your launch and takeout.
  • Check mileage before you start.
  • Allow time for slow water, fishing, and stops.
  • Do not assume every bridge has public access.
🛟

Wear a Life Jacket

Wear a properly fitted life jacket while on the water. Do not store it in the boat or sit on it like a cushion with paperwork.

  • Every paddler needs one.
  • Children should wear one at all times near water.
  • Secure all straps before launching.
  • Use the right size for each person.
💧

Bring Water and Sun Protection

Heat, sun, and slow water can turn a fun float into a long afternoon of poor choices.

  • Bring drinking water for everyone.
  • Use sunscreen and reapply it.
  • Wear a hat or sun shirt.
  • Pack snacks for longer trips.
🌉

Watch for Dams and Low Water Bridges

Dams and low water bridges can create dangerous currents. Scout hazards before reaching them.

  • Never paddle over a low head dam.
  • Portage where signs or conditions require it.
  • Stay alert near bridge openings.
  • Give yourself room to get out early.
🌳

Avoid Strainers and Fallen Trees

Fallen trees can pin boats and people. Moving water against wood creates serious risk, even in shallow sections.

  • Stay away from trees in the current.
  • Do not grab branches while moving.
  • Scout blind bends when needed.
  • Portage before you get too close.
🦠

Think About Water Quality

Bacteria levels often rise after rain. Algae can also appear during hot, low, slow water conditions.

  • Avoid swallowing river water.
  • Wait after heavy rain when possible.
  • Keep open cuts out of the water.
  • Avoid water that looks like paint, scum, or pea soup.
📱

Tell Someone Your Plan

Before you launch, tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back.

  • Share your launch and takeout.
  • Share who is with you.
  • Share your expected return time.
  • Bring a charged phone in a dry bag.
🗑️

Pack Out All Trash

Bring out everything you bring in. Bonus points for grabbing litter that was not yours. River karma keeps receipts.

  • Secure bottles, cans, and wrappers.
  • Do not leave fishing line behind.
  • Use trash bags in your boat.
  • Leave access points cleaner than you found them.
🐢

Respect Others on the River

The North Fork is shared by paddlers, anglers, swimmers, wildlife, and nearby landowners.

  • Keep noise reasonable near homes.
  • Give anglers space.
  • Do not trespass on private land.
  • Observe wildlife from a distance.
